Re: Uganda's Pied piper: I hate to bring this up, but the question over lack of awareness/involvement on the part of American public may require self-examination…

A Better Bulb

A Better Bulb

Chandrika Lewis

A while back, I opened my electric bill and saw a brochure on the new GE Energy Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Bulbs. The brochure said that this light bulb promises to lower your electric bill, lasts ten times longer than any regular light bulbs and they included a $5.00 off coupon. After seeing that, I thought to myself, well my energy bill runs about $170.00 a month. Maybe I should give it a try and with a $5.00 off coupon, it would not be that expensive. I quickly noticed the price was quite high, $4.99 for one bulb, so I looked around for multi packs and I found the 13 watt CFL bulbs that are the equivalent to a regular 60 watt bulb. They had a 12 pack for $19.76. I bought the 12 pack and used my $5.00 off coupon because you get more for your money. I went home and I proceeded to change out all of my light bulbs in the house.

Gradually, I started to see a change in my electric bill. I can honestly say I haven’t had to change any of my CFL bulbs in over a year. My bill has gone from $170.00 to $130.00. I am saving $40.00 a month on my electric bill. What I think is socially responsible about the GE Energy Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Bulbs is that GE Electric makes products that are efficient and helps the consumer save money on their electric bill which is really needed in the present state that our economy is in. The company also advises the consumer to recycle because the CFL bulbs are made with a tiny amount of mercury to function with high efficiency by recycling. It helps regain lamp materials, such as mercury, to reuse and to ease and increase recycling options. For their consumers, the company has made an agreement with recyclers that provide recycling options and services for distributors, homeowners, and retailers.

Would you try the CFL bulbs to save you money and help preserve our environment?
