Better with Bacon

Better with Bacon

Suzann M. Hess

While watching one of my favorite shows and trying to ignore after dinner cravings for junk food, a new Burger King ad came on talking about having a barbeque after work on the beach. This ad shows a bunch of office employees gathering around a fire on the beach enjoying the new food items from Burger King. They include frozen lemonade, Memphis BBQ pulled pork sandwich, Texas and Carolina BBQ tender grill and whopper sandwiches, and sweet potato fries.

Well, I was good and waited until lunch the next day to try out some of Burger King’s new summer menu items. When I arrived at Burger King I got quite a surprise. Yes, they had all the items from the commercial and one item that the commercial left out, a bacon sundae.

Now, I love ice cream and like bacon; but the 2 together just does not sound very appetizing to me. However, I am sure that true bacon lovers will jump at the chance to try this new desert. The bacon lover’s desert starts with vanilla soft serve ice cream that gets chocolate and caramel syrup drizzled over it. Bacon bits are then sprinkled over the sundae and it is all topped off with 3 large slices of bacon. A warning to those who are dieting, this is not going to help you lose weight. This bacon lover’s dream has 510 calories, 18 g of fat, 40 mg of cholesterol, 670 mg of salt, 18 g of fat, 10 g of saturated fat, 15 g of protein, and 61 grams of sugar.

Burger King is definitely going after bacon lovers with this desert. However, I just could not get past the picture to even try one. To all bacon lovers out there, I wish you the best and hope you enjoy this sweet and salty treat from Burger King. I am just glad it is for a limited time only.

Have you tried the Bacon Sundae at Burger King?

Suzann,

I have seen the bacon sundae advertisement at Burger King as well! I cannot believe people actually purchase this product. I agree with you, bacon lovers are definitely the target market to this product, but how do they know they are out there? I do not think Burger King would make such a product off complete risk, so there must be some kind of study depicting adequate interest in bacon sundaes. It would be very interesting to take a look at that study and see how it was conducted. By the way, which new summer menu items did you try?

ZRogers,

They actually did a test study in Tenessee before releasing it nationwide. Burger King also said that it was going to be in their new set of commercials for their new summer menu; but I have yet to see it. I personally do not know of anyone who is brave enought to try it.

I don't think that making a bacon sundae is a huge risk. They are suing ingredients that they already have in the store; bacon, soft serve ice cream, chocolate syrup. It would be a bigger risk if they crated a whole new product and had ingrediants just for that one item.
I doubt I will ever eat a bacon sundae, but I have a friend that just might....
