Re: Uganda's Pied piper: I hate to bring this up, but the question over lack of awareness/involvement on the part of American public may require self-examination…

Biebermania

Ashley Almeida Ponte

As I walked through the mall the other day, I overheard a tween speaking to her parents about clothing. They were walking into Sears and the child refused to enter the store. She did not want clothes from Sears. She then told her mother that Justin Bieber didn’t wear Sears’ clothes. The mother asked her how she knew and the child replied, “Because he was wearing Lacoste the last time I saw him on TV”. Now I don’t know about you but I didn’t know any name brand clothing growing up. I took what was given to me and was glad to have clothes on my back and a roof over my head

The mother repeatedly told the child she couldn’t afford those name brand clothes. The child was furious. Now we all know celebrities wear nice name brand clothing and they are sometimes paid to do so but that incident just reminded me of how much advertisers gear their advertisements toward children. If kids see that their favorite musicians or celebrities aren’t wearing or using certain types of gadgets then they don’t want them either.

Most kids unfortunately don’t know the value of a dollar and want everything they see on TV. Every child I know either has an iPod or wants one. If they do have one, they want a newer one. The advertisements for the iPod are all geared towards children. I have never seen a commercial for an iPod that shows “business” type applications. It always shows those “cool” games. But once parents buy it for their children, they will want one for themselves. Apple knows they can get to the parents through the children.

What brand names do your kids love or hate?

Sabrina,
Since my daughter is 9 years old, she does not really care about name brand clothing. I know many of you who read this will probably think "wait till she becomes a teenager". I know the marketing teams will be utilizing media and other resources to target my daughter as well as other teens. As a result teens will buy the products, they become popular in the schools and all of the kids want that product!
This happens all of the time in schools. When I was in grade school (back in the 80's), penny loafers were popular. And, I was so excited when I got my pair as I placed one shiny penny inside each one.
I don't think my daughter will be into Justin Bieber apparel since the last time she heard him singing on the radio thought he sounded like a girl. Of course I explained to her that he wasn't still it made me smile.
