Re: Uganda's Pied piper: I hate to bring this up, but the question over lack of awareness/involvement on the part of American public may require self-examination…

Billboard Driven

Billboard Driven

April Majors

Remember being a kid and watching all of the cool billboards go by? Well times have changed. Now you see the billboards that actually have movement and life to them. Not just simple slogans or a colored picture. As I was driving along the highway the other day I saw a billboard for a casino saying what car and how much money you can win if you play. If I remember correctly the billboard had a picture of a car on it and the actual amount of money you can win in the jackpot. The colors were so pretty and the money moving on the board was state of the art creativity. But the scheme of marketing is to get the message out to people about the product or services. The message of the billboard is to create awareness about the location and to lure people in to build sales at the casino.

The thought of driving a nice Corvette or winning over $25,000 just by viewing the advertisement made me want to go and see if I could win. Although I am not a gambler the enticement on the billboard makes you think what if. The notion that you could win such a prize from reading the billboard goes across your mind. I have stopped by a casino once because of an advertisement along the highway.

What happened to simple advertisement that was not so extravagant that left the “what ifs?” to your imagination? The advertisements that gave you a simple pleasure and made you think before making a sudden move. Those days are long gone. Now the casino billboards have come to life and draw people in like little children to toys and candy. The casino achieves the overall marketing objective – it literally drives traffic to the casino.

What are your feelings about the evolution of billboards? Does it change your mind?

I have also noticed the evolution of the billboard in recent times and being born in the 50's tend to resort to the older manner of thought in life. I do believe in the simplicity of life when your word was your bond and the advertising you saw was such that you could bank on it. It does tend to take away from the product or service when the modern technological innovations take over and the creativity overshadows the intent, however the fact that many businesses can incorporate their ads on one rotating billboard seems to have an advantage and will be noticed. I will personally think prior to responding to an add and even question others along with researching the statistics, but I do enjoy the innovations and business savvy of the changing billboards I have seen. Everything has its purpose but it wont sway my purchasing or service decisions either way.
