Controversy in Ads

Cannibal Crunch

Cannibal Crunch

Tamera Finch

It’s a nice relaxing Saturday afternoon and the kids are watching Nickelodeon. Suddenly General Mills is advertising their yummy Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. There are two crunchy squares standing next to each other when suddenly the one on the right begins to lick the one on the left, tasting it nonchalantly. When out of the blue the one on the left devours the one on the right with large teeth. Each crunchy square piece is so irresistible that they lick and devour each other. My children immediately turned to me with a confused look of disgust as each of their noses crinkled up. Just then it suddenly hit me. Kids all around the world have seen this commercial and I was wondering to myself how they perceived it.

I have seen three ads now all containing the same content and I don’t know about you, but for some reason I found it to be somewhat disturbing. This ad is targeting children and although the ad depicts tasty morsels of cereal… cannibalism comes to mind when watching it. I know cannibalism refers to humans devouring other humans, but really…bits of cereal eating each other? Also the fact that they are licking each other seems a little over the edge.

When the target group is children, I believe that marketing strategies need to be taken with caution. Children today are displaying a broader mind set. General Mills could change their strategy by displaying the concepts more tactfully by beginning with something a little more kid friendly that is not going to have your children questioning you with odd questions and saying it’s gross. Some individuals think the ad is cute while others feel the same as I do.

What is your take on this? Do you think that General Mills can present their product more tactfully or do you think the crunchy little squares should keep eating and licking each other?

I certainly feel that if General Mills, haven't had complaints from parents; they certainly should hear from parents. I agree that this ad not only does not have taste; their marketing management should be fired.

I have seen this ad but it was for a different cereal by general mills. I though it was kind of cute but awkward if you are sitting with a bunch of people watching it. Especially if they make rude comments about it. They need to be careful about what they put on television these days because there are so many children watching this and it is not right to show children this stuff. My child is starting to mimic things and she does copy certain things on television and I don't want this one to be one of them. There management should have thought this through before airing it and she be taught a great value of ethics and how to respond to young adult and children under the age of 7. But at least they haven't had to many complaints else they would not be showing it no more. It did seem funny at first but it just get old after seeing the same commercial eight hundred times.

i can see what you are saying, general mill needs to put more thought on how they advertise their product for children to look at this and want to eat the cereal, I do not make the
correlation of another piece of cereal eating another to be appetizing at all!

I agree that this ad could have an impact on young children. But firing the entire marketing staff? I think this is too much. The people in charge of marketing this product are not targeting the children with their ad, they are targeting the parents. I mean think about it, what good does targeting the kids go? They aren't the one's who will be buying the cereal. Yes the two little square dudes eating each other is over the top. But as a parent, the commercials are entertaining and will leave that impression for a while and maybe the kids will get the funny cereal from the commercial. This is all the marketing people are trying to accomplish here.
