Diamonds R4EVER

Diamonds R4EVER

Dr. Sabrina Segal

Valentine’s Day dates back to the 5th century as a tribute to a Catholic bishop and has morphed into a lovers’ holiday. For most of the 20th century, Americans sought to find the right card to make it a “Hallmark moment” and pick out the perfect flowers or chocolates for the that special someone. Those were simpler times.

Enter the Diamond Industry in the 1980’s. A Valentine’s mix of annual emotion-laden advertising campaigns with millions in capital to back it and a new trend is born. Forget bouquets and thoughtful candies, give a diamond.

“Every Kiss Begins with Kay” or “He went to Jarrod.” De Beer’s ubiquitous slogan “Diamonds are Forever” has survived since the 1940’s and immortalized in a 1970’s James Bond movie of the same name.

But all is not beautiful in the land of diamonds. The Oscar-nominated movie, Blood Diamond, brought forth the ugly side to sparkling love stories. America was finally exposed to the suffering, bloodshed, and death that surrounds the harvesting of the precious gems.

Not too good for romance.

Conflict diamonds, also known as Blood Diamonds, seem to find their way into jewelry stores around the world. Wonder how many of those shiny jewels are covered in Blood? On February 14th, your diamond bracelet could cost more lives than Al Capone’s Valentine’s Day Massacre. Is this the message you want to send to your beloved?
