Unfortunately, depends on your p.o.v. I don' t have the disposable income to indulge myself in every fad that comes along, ergo, I am a "late joiner"…
I heard the words “you have breast cancer” as they were uttered from the doctor’s mouth and then after that, I could see his mouth moving, but couldn’t hear another word he said. I really should have taken someone with me that day: but after all, I was in good health, ate right, exercised regularly, didn’t smoke or drink, so… this had to be a mistake, right? Well, it wasn’t a mistake, it was true, and I was visibly shaken to the core. No one ever wants to hear those words, but the sad truth of the matter is that far too many people do hear those words and then a subsequent battle ensues.
I had paid attention to all of the TV commercials and ads for breast cancer awareness and I was moved by them; I had participated in the Race for the Cure several times prior to being diagnosed. But there was one commercial that seemed a bit immature and just plain silly to me, it said something about “fight like a girl”, of all the nerve. Little did I know, until I heard those four frightful words, that not only would I be in a fight for my life, but would lose my identity as well. All that remained was the essence of the woman I had been, and the life enhancing female empowerment that only those who fight the battle with breast cancer will experience.
Emotional advertising is intended to capture the heart and soul of an audience so that a call to a specific action occurs, otherwise known as the art of persuasion. It is my opinion, and that of thousands of other breast cancer survivors, as well as those who are touched by the disease, that there is nothing any stronger, more gratifying, or more difficult than having the ability to “fight like a girl”!
