Controversy in Ads

What brings more attention than a controversial commercial? Well, that’s a good question. YouTube has the answer. It offers a venue for ads that cannot make it to the airwaves and alternate versions of commercials that are hugely popular.

One such ad, a Huggies diaper commercial that couldn’t catch any air time on television brought about last year’s jean diaper trend. It featured a boy walking around with a diaper that needed changing and the baby strutting to some music that is describing the look that he gets when he’s completed number 2. Not suitable for television so eventually the commercial was uploaded to YouTube where it received well over a million views. But is that really a bad thing? Imagine that you’ve made a very controversial commercial and you can’t get it on the air. Now, you have another venue for active viewing. No traditional airtime, but a sales bonanza nonetheless.

Advertising on YouTube does have its benefits. First of all, it’s free. Also, it’s constant; it can stay on online forever and never cost you a dime. So is this where advertising is going? Is this the next way to advertise? Could be, considering you can make such a controversial television commercial and never pay to have it aired.

Do you watch banned ads on YouTube? Do you ever buy those products?
