Controversy in Ads

Is thin really in?

Does Heroin Chic Sell?

Dr. Sabrina Segal

Pick up a Vogue or Glamour and you’ll see toothpick legs and bony elbows jutting out from beneath designer clothes. Hello? Is anyone paying attention? Women have curves; even Barbie has curves, impossibly proportioned, but the doll has curves!

Women’s fashion magazines are filled with ad images of thin models who are glorified glamour endorsers for seemingly endless products. The idolized American version of the perfect female body appears to have manifested itself in waif models perpetuated by mass media. Seen the show America’s Next Top Model? The token plus size contestant always goes home early.

Inasmuch as this phenomenon continues in the advertising world, it is to be ascertained that the use of these models is perceived to be effective through increased product sales and awareness. Because of successful advertising strategies and campaigns, ads featuring thin models continue in an effort to support the popularity of both products and images associated with products.

The pages of women’s fashion magazines are filled with sickly thing models many of whom look like they’re starving. And they get paid handsomely to represent a brand and its image. Do advertising depictions of waifish women inspire or manipulate you as a consumer?

Everywhere you turn, you're seeing skinny females presenting products in ads in our society. Of i don't have an real problem with it because im 100 pounds myself. I just feel like there are other models that weight more than that and can present today's image better or just the same. Tyra has that show "next top model" and most of the time all you see is skinny girls that look like they are dying. Why can't big girls represent our society? Does it really matter what size they are. All women are beautiful and smart and i feel everybody could post up in an commercial or ad and make a good image for our environment.

I think that it is a shame that in this day and age people are still closed minded enough to judge a person by their size. There are only a small percentage of US women who measure up to the fashion industry's standards, yet so many young girls strive to look like them by doing horrific things to their bodies to be rail thin. My four year old daughter told me this weekend that when she gets big she wants to be 'tiny skinny and have huge boobies.' Four years old! It is so sad that girls are pretty much taught by the media that in order for them to be accepted and beautiful, they have to be sickly thin. I am in no way saying that people should be obese, there is a happy medium, but what grown woman needs to be so thin she has to shop in the junior or children's department?

I have three daughters and more than anything I want them to be healthy. All of them are in sports and are thin due to the activity, But all of the women on either side of the family are full figured. It is true that Barbie has curves but the dolls that many young ladies play with don't resemble any Barbie I remember. My middle daughter wanted to dress as a Bratz girl for Halloween, but said she wouldn't look right because she was too big . . . she's 10 and weight s 65 pounds. After a long talk she decided there were better things to be, but what I learned was this obsession to be thin starts somewhere and doesn't start out as an obsession.

I think the ad (Is Thin Really In) is disgusting and cruel. Why is it that people or should I say skinny people think that everyone should be pencil thin? I think the show (America's Next Top Model) stigmatizes women in the most cruel and unprofessional way. I'm a plus-size woman myself and I have positive self-esteem and I like, love, and admire myself, that's the way every woman should think of herself skinny or large in this way. I believe God made everyone special and unique we all have attributes and short-comings. One should remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder and looks come and go. It's what's on the inside that counts. Another thing if you can't say anything nice than don't say anything at all!!!

Best regards,

Rosetta

I agree. Being a plus size myself it's rare to find an add featuring plus size models. Society today are only focusing on thin size models. To me these models always look sick like they are suffering from anorexia or bulimia. Projecting these models are somewhat deceiving because most females especially the younger generation would tend to believe that size 0-3 is healthy and thats the way they should look. Beauty is not about size is from within, so size should not matter. No two persons are alike and I'm addressing this topic in regards to size and not the fact of being overweight, its a big difference.

Consumers should look at the product being marketed, not the person marketing the product. I now this is not happening. Not every one in the world is the same size. Real thin is not healthy, no matter what anyone says.People need to be happy with them selves.A plus size to me is not a size 10 or 12. This is average and a healthy size. Full figure sizes to me are 18 and over. Marketers need to make adds that show different sizes of consumers using their products. Consumers also need to know just because a thin person is on a advertisement that any body can use the product.

Do advertising depictions of waif-like women inspire or manipulate me as a consumer? I would have to say at this stage of my life...NO!!
These death-like looking creatures do not influence my decision on whether or not to purchase a product. At this stage of my life, the only thing that influences my purchases are, do I need it?, and how much does it cost? These types of ads will influence me to not buy the product promoted. I think they send the wrong message. In our society we have enough problems to worry about and direct our focus on, rather than these types of ads, which only contribute to our issues rather than help resolve them. Too many women have self-esteem and self body image issues that affect their everyday lives as it is, and it is my personal opinion that for decades these types of ads have fueled the fire leading to anorexia, bulimia, drug addiction, and other forms of self-mutilation for women and recently, are also affecting men. I am not saying that these types of ads are soley responsible for these types of our society's issues as we must take personal responsibility for ourselves as individuals

This is going to sound sexist, but its true. The reason why we have stick figure women in magazines is because most women want to be thin and the magazines just show them what they want. If someone did market research into what men want all they have to do is look at pornstars. Models are there to advertise to women, not to men. Marketing geared toward men has women that look like pornstars.

I feel ashamed to be Fat or should i say overweight these days in society!!!!! It's a real shame because i have a daughter whose 14 and a niece to be by marriage who is also 14 and they are both the complete opposite!!My daughter is a vegetarian not by my choice seeing how shes 1400 miles away from me and my boyfriends niece is a little chubby and doesnt want to be SKINNY!!! Ya know its almost a shame that their are shows like America's Next Top Model!!!! These judges including Tyra Banks are VERY hard on these girls! I know if i was on that show i would be afraid to ever eat! Why???? what is the purpose? They do not EVER have one overweight or slightly chubby person on that show and for someone like me whose a little overweight i feel that i look beautiful just the way i am and my boyfriend tells me the same every day. Who needs to have millions of dollars to feel skin and bones. NOT ME !!!!!!!!!!

I believe that those advertisements are sending the wrong message to kids and adults everywhere! Using a skinny beautiful model to sell a product or a certain look is not realistic. In the real world everyone has a different shape and size, this is why God make us each "individuals". if we all looked a certain way no one would be unique anymore. Sending this message to children saying they need to look a certain way to fit in causes severe mental and physical problems. Yes, fat is not attractive, but anorexic is not attractive either. They need to get real and put women that have a "real" body figure on the cover of those magazines and let America know that the majority overrules! Unfortunately, this is not how our society is run. It's a shame that if you weigh a certain amount they declare you obese or at the very least, overweight.
