Recently there has been increased airtime for the “It Gets Better” campaign. It is a public service announcement meant to reach children who are struggling with their sexuality as well as children being bullied. It Gets Better has a simple enough format of user submitted videos detailing their own experiences as children and always letting the newer generation know, “It Gets Better.” Contributors range from the Seattle Mariners to Seventh Day Adventists to Stephen Colbert.
This type of message is invaluable to our nation’s youth. Suicide is a preventable death that many children face due to the pressures put on them by their peers. Letting teens know that high school isn’t the end of the world, that really it is barely the beginning is inspiring. The world needs more messages like that. Many kids just need someone who can listen to them or to tell them that what they are feeling is normal and not to be ashamed. The media is placing such a focus on same-sex marriage that they are turning the word gay into something vile and repulsive. It Gets Better proves that being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered is not a bad thing it is just different and that’s OK.
I am proud to live in a world where people are actually starting to stand up for what is right and just.
