Mars’ Bad Decision

Mars' Bad Decision

Donald R. Dodge

In 1981 Universal Studios was in the process of making the film ET directed by Steven Spielberg. There was a crucial scene in the movie where the boy got the alien to come to him by using candy. So Universal went to Mars to see if they would let them use M&M candy for the scene.

Mars was afraid that Spielberg had not proven himself enough yet as a director. The only films he had directed were Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. They did not feel making a cuddly children’s movies was in his realm of directing and thought the movie would be a flop and did not want their candy to be connected to a failure.

Universal signed a deal with Hershey instead.

Hersey agreed to let them use a new candy they had just released called Reese’s Pieces which had been light in sales over it first weeks on the market. With the product being used and ET becoming the top grossing film that year the recognition help sales for Reese’s Pieces skyrocket. Their sales tripled in the first two weeks and continued to grow over the next months. With promoting the movie and recognition with ET, Hershey was able to save $15-20million in promoting the product on its own.

What are the best movie or TV product placements that you have seen?
