Subway’s latest campaign features Sandra, a shapely well-dressed female coworker who walks up to Todd with a foot long partially wrapped Subway Melt in both hands. It is obvious by his expression that Todd is attracted to Sandra; however, Sandra is fascinated by the size and length of the sandwich and is about to capitalize on Todd’s feelings for her so she can deprive him of his lunch. The main way women manipulate men, Sandra, in childlike innocence and a voice to match asks, “Todd would you like to be my boyfriend?” Dumbfounded and speechless, it takes Todd a couple moments to respond. When he responds in the affirmative, Sandra lays claim to his lunch. Todd protests and is told “You are my boyfriend now.” Here a woman is allowed to use her femininity in the workplace to get what she wants without any repercussion.
The positioning of the product was expertly done; the colors were eye catching and the use of children’s voices grabs attention. Is Subway saying that women are manipulative creatures by nature and men are their victims? Women you can get whatever you want by manipulating a man; because, he is too dumb to know what’s going on and by the time he realizes what is taking place, you have gotten what you wanted and are on your way.
Is this commercial about food or is it about women using their sexuality in the workplace?
