Marketing the Economy

Side Effects

Side Effects

Dr. Sabrina Segal

Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, and in rare cases paralysis, and even death.

In the middle of a commercial the announcer runs down a list of side effects for the drug being marketed. The dry mouth is not as bothersome to me as death. Am I supposed to roll the dice and hope that I am not that fraction of the population who will be confined to a wheelchair or become deceased after taking my prescription?

Yes, that’s exactly what they’re saying. And yet these drugs are FDA approved?

The people look happy and carefree on those Valtrex commercials. After all the side effects are relatively minor and include sore throat and dizziness. I guess that is better than the condition it is allegedly supposed to treat.

We hear news stories of prescription drugs being pulled from the shelves, and later the lawyers’ calls for class action lawsuits. There is a drug, Aprotinin, used during heart surgery that may significantly raise the risk of kidney failure and stroke. The scary part is: the patients may not have known they were given this drug while undergoing the procedure. Just as drugs Bextra and Vioxx were both pulled from the shelves, so should Aprotinin…don’t you think and not on a temporary basis?

I remember the cool ads for Zelnorm with pictures drawn on attractive young women’s bellies. It was silly. The drug is used to treat constipation resulting from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). I guess you need to have fun with the concept on TV, since they are talking about promoting the evacuation of your bowels (not so pretty).

But enter recent FDA warnings about rectal bleeding when taking Zelnorm. Those lovely, giggling ladies may not be laughing anymore.

Another snappy commercial is for Detrol with its catchy jingle “Gotta go gotta go gotta go right now.” The overactive bladder medication states it is “generally well tolerated” and its side effects include headache, constipation, and abdominal pain. Wow, so few side effects. Maybe there is hope.

How do you feel about prescription drug ads on TV and the lists of side effects that follow?
On a scale of one to ten, what is your faith in the U.S. Food & Drug Administration?

Thanks for bringing this topic into view, I love the article. My brother is a pharmaceutical representative and we have had MANY knock down, drag out fights over this FDA/medicine topic. It is such a polarizing topic for many people.

It is hard to defend the selling of people's health and well being.

I can't believe the FDA drags its heels on approving certain drugs, it is an odd thing that is for sure.

I watch all those "up all night" pill ads and some of the side effects are CRAZY to think people weighing the positive verses the negative problems.

I don't put too much faith in the FDA, it seems like the government is hitting that department with a lot of budget cut-backs and they are quite understaffed.

I would have to say 2/10

I think the FDA needs to do more research on drugs before they put them on the market. I do not trust the FDA too far and the tv advertisements for prescription drugs are really crazy. Some of them make me laugh because of the list of side effects they give. Why would anyone want to take any drug if it can have so many side effects?

I have had alot of health issues in the past several years. I was too busy working to take time to take care of myself. I am now and have been for years, a patient with at least 9 different doctors. Someone mentioned on this posting that it amazes them that people actually take this medicine that is prescribed for them, with all the horrific side effects possible. The simple fact is when you are sick, weak, and scared, you assume that doctors know what they are doing. You have to trust them, believing you will get better. Unfortunately, what happens is they prescribe you medicine and never ever mention side effects or even interaction with other meds. They dont mention once you get on a med, you may never get off of it due to extreme withdrawals, which are often worse than the condition they are treating. The thing is you need to trust them, sometimes they are all you have. But after years of more and more meds prescribed, you find you are on a vicious cycle and you cant just quit. But most of us do learn eventually. Now I research on my own every medication prescribed for me. You can not even rely on the pharmacies that fill your prescriptions anymore to let you know of possible dangerous interactions with your other medications. The whole thing comes down to one thing. Money. Money for the companies making and supplying the medicine, Money for the doctors to pass out all the new samples without proper information to the patient. The only loser in this scenario is us, the patients. Something has to change. FDA only cares about making their profit as well. Who cares about the patient anymore?
