Very well written. I could not agree more there is no such thing as a "happy period" other than they confirm you are not pregnant. These ads are probably…

Silly Rabbit

I recently attended a health and nutrition conference entitled “Pioneering Healthy Communities.” I listened to our Surgeon General speak about her vision of having a “healthy and fit nation.” However, I don’t see how this could be possible as the United States has reached an all-time high regarding the number of obese children living in our country today.

Unfortunately, so many commercials that are viewed by young children during their TV show favorites portray unhealthy foods as being the best, coolest, and most fun choices. Shouldn’t there be a Surgeon General’s warning attached to these commercials? Warning…consumption of these unhealthy foods is hazardous to your health! They will cause obesity that leads to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, even death. So kids, if you want to live past 35, stop eating this junk!!

Instead, money supersedes our better judgment once again. Marketing geniuses create these cartoon-like characters that are funny and interesting for children to watch. We then allow these ads to be strategically placed smack dab in the middle of other cartoon favorites like Dora or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. It’s like feeding candy to a baby…literally! Not many children can recite an advertisement for carrot sticks or an apple but most kids know that silly rabbit! Trix are for kids!!

Hello??!! Silly Rabbit, Trix Are For Unhealthy Kids!!

Is there a way to turn this epidemic around? Michelle Obama’s commitment to health and nutrition is a start. Seeing her promote healthy snacks with child idols such as Brenda Song certainly speaks to the recognition of the issue at hand. Any influence to create and maintain healthy eating habits among young children could have lasting impressions on future food choices and will be one of the leading causes of better, more positive health outcomes as adults. I know sugar sells. It tastes great and is in almost everything. However, is it possible to market healthy foods as the new cool? Silly rabbit! You’ve been eating carrots your whole life! Stick to them!!

Are sugary kid’s cereal really a problem?
