Wanna Be a Big Loser

Wanna Be a Big Loser

Kimberly Feigel

I may be considered an unusual consumer because, as a rule, I do not watch television. I don’t even have television reception in my home. But once a week I drive 20 miles to my sister’s house to watch the inspiring “The Biggest Loser” on NBC.

What makes this television series different? It is still a reality show with all of the drama and intrigue. However, the goal is one that is hard to refute. The goal is to help America become healthier. The contestants are not the only ones that benefit from this program. It also provides valuable information and inspiration to a large range of viewers.

This show has spawned a whole new market of socially responsible advertising and products. Just watch the commercials during the program and you will be shown the benefits of water filters and Lean Cuisine. You can buy the previous seasons on DVD of course, but there are other beneficial products such as the Biggest Loser cookbook and work out DVDs. I own several of their DVDs and they are no walk in the park!

I am one of the statistics. I am an overweight American. Technically I am considered obese. However, I am active and I resent the labels that are applied to me. I mountain bike, snow board, hike, and participate in other activities. It is very hard for me to find work out gear and sports equipment to accommodate my size. The show inspires me because it shows real people and their struggles. It is also raising awareness in our country and giving new life to the focus on healthier eating and exercise.

It is so amazing to see a positive influence created by a television show and the advertising related to it. To view the amazing transformations that happen on this show and know that they are real people with real lives is just inspiring. It is so rare that something motivational and inspiring is a prime time hit. America deserves to hear some good news. I want to be a big loser!

So is this show exploiting the contestants and creating too much drama? Is this show a benefit to society or just another reality show?

I wasn't one of the stats that you talk about until I hit 34. But I always thought I was. I weighed 98 pounds when I entered my junior year of high school yet when I looked in the mirror I would see me at 300 lbs. Also I can still hear my mother's words of "you won't get a husband if you eat that whopper." I was 98 lbs! I have never watched the show, but have watched people who diet and diet and kill themselves to fit in a mold of reality. I can understand a healthy way of eating and weight management for you, your heart or joints, but I still can't look in a mirror, in fact the only mirror I have in my house is the one on the medicine cabinet. I think these shows and commercials ruin the self esteem of young people who find it hard enough to fit in. Some people can not help the weight they have, yet that is never covered in any of these shows.
